About Tharua
Tharua is situated in the beautiful Kenyan highlands, on the plains between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range in the Laikipia district, which is one of the few areas in East Africa where wildlife in general and predators in particular are on the increase.
The house itself is an old working farmhouse from the original 11,000 acres of Tharua Ranch, but is now a peaceful haven for visitors to come and relax and enjoy the diverse and beautiful surroundings either on horseback, by 4 wheel drive or on foot.
We have four en suite bedrooms, which sleep 6, and a traditional roundhouse with open fire and magnificent views of Mount Kenya . Here you can enjoy our home cooked meals which are a cross over between Kenyan and British cuisine and share your experiences of the day whilst taking a few sundowners.
We both fell in love with Kenya 10 years ago and decided to sell our Cornish livery yard and start up a new life in Africa in 2003. We still experience the same excitement today in seeing the wildlife as we did the very first time and welcome guests to join us and hope to show them why we fell in love with this wonderful continent.
The horses are tough thoroughbred crosses that are used to living in the bush and require a reasonable standard of rider for the three-day safari, as there are wild animals that some times need to be avoided.
The Kenyan people are charming and love to please, they work tirelessly to make you feel welcome, not because it is their job but because they want you to like their country.
