Nyakio Primary School
Although we are trying to provide a once in a lifetime experience for our guests and to make you as comfortable as possible, its hard to ignore third world poverty, especially amongst the young. The best chance of overcoming poverty is through education, and it is our policy to support this.
We are heavily involved with a local rural school, Nyakio Primary (which you will visit). The school is in a very poor district due to lack of employment and very little rain. The children are more worried about where their next meal is coming from rather than watching their favorite program on T. V (which most of them have never seen)
Since we became involved with the school 4 years ago we have managed to build 5 new classrooms, a new kitchen and store and have replaced 2 classrooms which were falling down. This means the children from the area can now finish primary education at the same school. Previously this was not possible and the majority of the kids failed to attend another school, mainly because it was several hours walk away.
135 children aged 6 - 14 now attend the school.
In 2008 we hope to rebuild the last classroom, plant trees around the school to provide wood fuel for cooking, paint the classrooms to make them a little more cheerful and sponsor some of the brightest kids through secondary education. In Africa secondary education is all privately funded.
As of January 2008 we have 7 very bright children from the area who are been sponsored through secondary education, funded by Tharua Safaris, friends and guests who have visited us in the past. We are very grateful to all these people.
Rebuilding classrooms and funding secondry education is all done with money we (Tharua Horse and 4x4 safaris) donate from our business.
