Nyakio Primary School

Although we are trying to provide a once in a lifetime experience for our guests and to make you as comfortable as possible, its hard to ignore third world poverty, especially amongst the young. The best chance of overcoming poverty is through education, and it is our policy to support this.

We are heavily involved with a local rural school, Nyakio Primary (which you will visit). The school is in a very poor district due to lack of employment and very little rain. The children are more worried about where their next meal is coming from rather than watching their favorite program on T. V (which most of them have never seen)

Since we became involved with the school in 2003 we have managed to build 7 new classrooms, a nursery, a new kitchen and store. This means the children from the area can now finish primary education at the same school. Previously this was not possible and the majority of the kids failed to attend another school, mainly because it was several hours walk away.

We now have over 200 children aged 6 - 14 attending the school, prior to our support this number was below 60 children.

In 2009 we completed a fencing project which fenced the whole school. This meant we were able to plant over 1000 tree's, making the school self sufficient in wood fuel for cooking and future building projects.

As of December 2009 we have 18 very bright children from the area who are been sponsored through secondary education, all funded by Tharua Safaris, friends and guests who have visited us in the past. We are very grateful to all these people.

In 2010 Tharua Safaris will be installing guttering on all class rooms and installing two 10,000 litre tanks to store fresh water for the children to drink. The water is currently brought from a dam over 2km away.

Rebuilding classrooms and funding secondary education is all done with money we (Tharua Horse and 4x4 safaris) donate from our business.
